This bronze sculpture by Frank Szirmay represents Tangaroa, Maori god of the sea whose role it is, or was, to protect the sea. Frank Szirmay has portrayed him as a warrior in crouched position and grasping a taiaha (a long club fighting staff) as if performing the wero. The wero is the traditional Maori challenge given during the Powhiri (formal welcoming ceremony) to determine if visitors intentions are friendly.
